Sophie seemed like such a nice girl. It was a shame, really. He had expected her to be like all the other lost souls who came to Ta’Shela. Hollow and beaten down by their circumstances. When he’d been informed that she might pass through here, he thought it would have been a simple job like the others. Report on their location and when they would be leaving the monastery. But now he felt a little guilty. Handing over those slaves had been like returning stolen property. Sophie was different. She wasn’t a slave. Technically, she was a free woman, only beholden to her family by tradition. It didn’t sit quite right with him, but it really wasn’t his decision to make.

He rarely had to get his hands dirty. All he had to do was send a message, and occasionally guide someone in the wrong direction, and the wizards took care of the rest. He passed through the archway to a prayer room that the monks rarely used these days and made sure that he was alone before pulling a small emerald out of his pocket. If they were leaving at dawn, he needed to send a message right away. If all went as planned, the wizards could be at Ta’Shela by nightfall.
